The majority of the bull pizzles being sold in the UK are made in Asia where the standards are very different to the UK and EU and there is no safe or controlled monitoring of the manufacturing process. We're aware of producers who hang their pizzles outside to dry with no monitoring and use plastic bags containing inappropriate weights tied to the ends of them to stretch them while drying. They get covered in flies then are brushed off and cut and packaged on a dirt floor before being despatched to wholesalers and the UK retailers without being heat-treated to the required 90 degrees to kill pathogens such as Salmonella as per UK DEFRA import requirements and EU Regulation 142/20011.

If you're currently buying pizzles from European or Turkish suppliers, there's a good chance they originate from Asia and do not conform to UK health requirements. Our dogs are at risk of Salmonella, Campylobacter, E.Coli, and several other pathogens from chewing on pizzles produced outside of the minimum UK veterinary requirements.
